David Levithan's Every Day poses compelling questions: What if a person, who inhabits a different body every day, falls in love? Could the beloved of such a person return that love? While trying to find the answer, the protagonist known only as "A" faces various moral dilemmas related to its unusual circumstances. From the moment A falls in love, its code of non-interference with the lives of people it inhabits becomes impossible to maintain. How could you not interfere when the person you love is in an unhealthy relationship? Although "most days are ordinary," A finds itself in several extraordinary situations, such as being accused of dealing drugs and suffering injuries from a drunk driving accident. Plausibility is sometimes stretched thin in order to serve the plot or the theme of sexual identity (A inhabits someone who challenges sexual/gender roles more than once). However, the overall result is a thought-provoking, entertaining, and poignant story. Love brings with it desire, which can cause even the best of us to behave selfishly. It is inspiring to read about someone who faces that challenge with honor, dignity, and even greater love.
